Visiting Uganda

The Pearl of Africa

Illustrated map of Uganda with waterfall, mountain, wildlife, city skyline, and river scenes

The Pearl of Africa

Uganda packs more raw variety into one trip than almost anywhere else on the continent. In a single itinerary, you can look a mountain gorilla in the eye, track chimpanzees through rainforest canopy, drive past lions and elephants on the savanna, and ride the white water where the Nile begins — all within a country roughly the size of the UK. This is where Africa's primates, predators, rivers, and cultures meet in one unforgettable journey.

These are key tourist areas:

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla Trekking, Nature Walks
  • Murchison Falls National Park. MurchisoUganda at a Glance
  • Home to ~half the world's remaining mountain gorillas — nowhere else offers easier or more reliable access to them.
  • The only country where you can trek gorillas and chimpanzees on the same trip — a combination no other safari destination can match.
  • 10 national parks and dozens of reserves, packed into a country smaller than most single U.S. states.
  • Source of the Nile — the world's longest river begins its 6,650 km journey right here in Jinja.
  • Home to the famous Shoebill Stork - also known as "The Dinosaur Bird", it truly is unique.
  • Nicknamed "The Pearl of Africa" by Winston Churchill in 1908 — a name that has stuck for good reason.
  • Sits directly on the Equator — travelers can stand with one foot in each hemisphere near Kayabwe.
  • Big Five, primates, water adventure, and culture in one itinerary — few destinations let you do all four without adding flights.
  1. n Falls, Game Drives, Boat Safaris
  2. Kibale National Park. Chimpanzee Tracking, Forest Walks
  3. Lake Bunyonyi. Canoeing, Island Hopping, Scenic Views

  5. Jinja, Source of the Nile. White Water Rafting, Kayaking, Nile Cruises
  6. Lake Mburo National Park. Walking Safaris, Game Drives, Birdwatching
  7. Igongo Cultural Centre. Ankole Heritage, Traditional Architecture, Cultural Experiences
