Your guides will pick you up early in the morning after breakfast and drive you through the scenic land of a 1000 Thousand Hills to the Rwanda/Congo border and assist you through to meet our expert Congo guide.

There the trasnfer to the beautiful Mikeno Lodge in Virunga National Park takes approximately 1 hour.  Upon check in and a chance to freshen up we visit a local Coffee Coop. It doesn’t get much more remote than this and you will see and learn the benefits this COOP is making to local coffee farmers who otherwise wouldn’t have access to outside markets.

DAY 3: RARE MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREK

After your breakfast your driver guide will transfer you to the National Park Headquarters for an expert briefing on your impending trek.

You will be in awe of the level of care and custodianship the trackers and guides show.  During the tumultuous years these brave guards protected and sacrificed much in order to you allow people today to safely experience Mountain Gorillas and see their numbers now growing.

The trek can take anywhere from 1-6 hours as the Gorillas who spend most of the day eating move from place to place.  When you finally see them you will be in awe of their gentle power, family structure and amazing presence.  It’s described as one of the great animal encounters on the planet.

DAY 4: YOUR CHOICE OF CHIMPANZEE HABITUATION TREK OR CLIMBING A LIVE VOLCANO!!!

Today your trip of a lifetime continues as you are faced with a choice we can guarantee you none of your friends, family or colleagues have been faced with.

For those fit and adventurous you will head off to climb Mt. Nyirangongo.  Yes this is a live volcano but very safe.  In fact after the 6 hour climb you are not only able to see in to the crater and view the largest lava lake in the world but you will be staying on the craters edge in shelters for the night before descending.  The views are incredible.

If your fitness or excitement levels want to take a small step backwards then you have the option to instead visit a family of 32 Chimpanzees in the area.  The park rangers are gradually habituating this group for more tourists to come and see.  Habituation doesn’t mean touching or feeding, its’ simply a two year process of getting the group used to humans, just like the Gorillas.  Guaranteed you’ll recognise a few relatives in there as along with the Congo Bonobos these are our closest genetic relatives.

DAY 5: TRANSFER TO VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, RWANDA VIA INGOBOKA COFFEE

Those who took the Mt Nyirangong Volcano option will return around 11am with their photos and stories.  We will all meet up on their return and transfer back to Rwanda.

On crossing the border we will take a short boat ride to visit Ingoboka Coffee which is located on Lake Kivu.  At this award winning coop you will experience the full coffee making journey from crop to washing station to cup.  Be sure to take a bag home with you.

Here you will pick your own coffee cherries from the coffee plantation and follow them through the entire coffee washing and processing chain. At the end of this exciting visit, clients enjoy a cup of hand-ground and traditionally roasted Rwanda great coffee together with their local hosts.

Some facts about Ingoboko Coffee Coop:

  • Number of direct beneficiaries: ca. 350 cooperative members
  • Number of indirect beneficiaries: ca. 2,000 dependents
  • Community percentage of profit sharing: at least 70%
  • Material community benefits: 11 rotating income-generating opportunities, community development fund, sale of coffee.

Then it’s an hours drive to Musanze district at the foothills of the magnificent Volcanoes National Park.  It’s the reverse side of the mountain range you were on in Congo and the five peaks are spectacular (they are all dormant on this side of the border).

If we arrive early enough you’ll catch your lodges Rwandan dancers who are very skillful and enthusiastic.  A much watch and real spirit lifter.

Enjoy dinner ready for an easier trek tomorrow of the rare and unique Golden Monkeys.

DAY 6: GOLDEN MONKEY TREK AND RULINDO COFFEE VISIT

There are not truly many better ways than to wake up looking at the 5 Volcano peaks of Volcanoes National Park, unless it’s with a great cup of Rwandan Bourbon Arabica Coffee as well.  Have your camera charged and ready.  Today we have another really fun trek in store.

Golden Monkeys are very rare and nowhere in Africa is there better access to large habituated numbers than in Rwanda.

These unique, playful and beautiful creatures will entertain you for a good hour and the trek on average is normally much easier than the Gorilla Trek.

After lunch we will check out and visit Rulindo Coffee.  This district has benefited greatly from coops and we get a great story along with coffee immersion experience here.

Rulindo Cocatu is a cooperative in the area of Tumba town, in the mountainous Rulindo district, Northern Rwanda.

Located at 1820 meters, the coop actually draws coffee from the surrounding hills of 2000+ meters. Cocatu is one of the surviving cooperatives from a time when many were formed but few truly prospered. The problem was not the quality of coffee or effort of the farmer-members. It was the absence of sound business advice to control expenses and raise the working capital to buy coffee cherry in the harvest. Cocatu has had one great advantage over the last 5 years though: They have had a consistent buyer paying a great price for the coffee.

Cocatu showing a beautiful fruited sweetness, such a freshness in the cup. The dry frangrance has the smell of dark cherry and grape, with fine chocolate bittersweetness. In the darker roast ranges a pungent cooked sugar smell develops. Maple sugar and butterscotch billow in the steam after adding hot water, with date, plum and fresh fig in the wet aromatics, a fruited sweetness released on the break. Once the coffee reaches drinking temperature, there is a dark blackberry tartness, raw honey, and a spiced plum note. Cocatu is fairly fruit-forward in cup character, and as the coffee cools, a really nice grape juice flavour accent develops along with tartaric acidity brilliance, and crowning floral grace note. There’s a chocolate malt aspect too, as well as a touch of spice in the finish. Cocatu has fruit juice-like body, and paired with a slightly darker roast level becomes quite fudge-like. But fruits remain at the forefront, even in these darker roasts: both flesh and the tart skins of plum and pluot come to mind. The finish is long and pleasant, with a mingling of sweet fruit notes, cinnamon tea, and dark chocolate hanging on in the aftertaste. And it produces a nice espresso too!

Afterwards we return to Kigali for dinner and overnight.
